We ran an article about a New Life in the Sun when series one was screened earlier this year. We thoroughly enjoyed it, so were thrilled to see series two start this week.
This series kicked off with various couples making new lives in the sun, including a couple opening a B&B in order to fulfill the dream of the wife’s father. He had wished to open a B&B in France before he passed away and his daughter and her partner have now been able to do that on his behalf. There was also the former estate agent couple buying a vineyard in France, despite having no experience aside from an eye for detail and a love of wine. But for the purpose of this article, we’d like to introduce you to Joe Reed and his lady Jolene who are on the Costa Blanca.
Joe and Jolene
Orginally from Torquay, Joe and Jolene have made a new life for themselves on the Costa Blanca. Jolene is a professional singer in benidorm, while ex-soldier Joe likes to turn his hand to all manner of things. His latest venture is a paragliding business in Agost… a new idea he’s hoping to get off the ground.
Joe used savings to set up the business, while Jolene brought the day to day money in.The happy vcouple joke about money. Joe said, “I’ve got you working like a donkey.” Jolene laughed, “Yeah you have actually. That’s got to change!”
Spain is the 2nd most mountainous country in Europe (after Italy) meaning that there are several locations perfect for paragliding. Joe has been pounding the streets, raising awareness of the business and chatting to potential clients. Although paragliding is not everyone’s idea of fun, Joe is not worried. He added, “90 people won’t paraglide but it’s those ten that I want to get. And they ARE here.”
As with any new venture, Joe’s business was hit with a couple of problems at the outset. Joe’s van (needed to transport customers to and from the launch site) was off the road for four weeks and cost him €1000 to get back on the road again. Then, on one of his first days out, the wind looked set to cause issues. But all that was forgotten when Sebastian and Benjamin were able to enjoy the views of the Costa Blanca from the air. The ensuing feedback has been excellent and Joe’s business looks to be taking off and reacdhing new heights – in all the best ways.
We spoke to Joe today by phone. He said that the business is doing well, and he is already receiving enquiries off the back of the programme. Although this is a quiet time of year for outdoor activities, the next season looks set to be a great success. His business not only covers paragliding, but also guided mountain walks – a great way to explore the breathtaking scenery of the Costa Blanca.
Peter and Leigh: Cortijo Los Lucas
Our friends Peter and Leigh from Cortijo Los Lucas in Almería, featured in series one, have told us that they’ll be in this series again too… updating the news of their fabulous holiday accommodation and its new addition – the restaurant. We’ve seen the menu and it looks amazing!
Sadly, we haven’t managed to get up to the restaurant to try the food for ourselves yet. I’d already organised another event in November when a group of Costa Women Almería were going for a meal, so I had to miss out on that occasion, but I expect that Alan and I will be visiting them at some point anyway. We’ll report back once we have.
