How Sidney the Kidney was born.
On April 4 2017, Lanzarote resident Eddie Marsh received a donor kidney from his Brother-in-law, Mark Laurie.
Now Eddie and his loved ones are raising funds to thank the medical professionals in the Canary Islands who cared for him while his health deteriorated and who have continued throught the transplant and to this day. At the same time, they hope to raise awareness of ADPKD.
What is AKPKD?
AKPKD stands for Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease, a disease that affects approximately 1 or 2 people in every 1000 people worldwide.
The disease affects cell growth in the kidneys, leaving fluid-filled sacs in their wake. Over a longer term, these cysts can affect other bodily functions which vary in severity between sufferers. In the worst cases there are only two options – dialysis or transplant. Eddie was one such person. He was extremely fortunate to be able to find, not only a compatible donor, but a living onbe within his own family.
