Matthew’s article this week concentrates on moving to Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote’s bright lights.
Moving to Puerto del Carmen: resort Lanzarote
Moving to Puerto del Carmen: Ups
Why let only tourists reap the benefits of resorts? These areas developed, after all, because they enjoyed a location under the island’s balmiest skies and close to beaches the hue of gold. Puerto del Carmen is no exception, having grown from a humble port exporting the likes of handmade soap to England to now being one of the major tourist hubs on the whole of the Canary Islands.
Moving to Puerto del Carmen: Downs
Artist/activisit César Manrique’s vision of his native island was of traditional whitewashed properties draped in vivid bougainvillea. It’s fair to say that some of Puerto del Carmen’s newer apartments don’t quite match that colour scheme. This is non-prettified Lanzarote.
Moving to Puerto del Carmen: Ins and outs
Follow the LZ-40 to arrive at Puerto del Carmen in under 10 minutes from the airport outside capital Arrecife.
The British School of Lanzarote has been offering a UK-style education on the island for 30+ years. Students study SATS and IGCSEs before being given the option at 16 to continue with the British system or switch to the Spanish one. So, they can choose between A-Levels and the Baccalaureate.
Shop until you drop…
The Avenida de las Playas is home to a Fund Grube. One of five branches of this Canarian chain on Lanzarote, they stock brand-name beauty products, along with handbags and sunglasses. You can also pick up the latest releases from the world’s leading fashion houses.
The Biosfera deserves an extra special mention. This stylish and popular shopping centre is home to big brands and independents with bargains galore for eager shoppers. There are also plenty of cafes to leave your spouse or family in if you want to head off shopping on your own.
The “Strip” offers a fair offering of electronics shops (buyer beware), gifts and clothing in among the many bars and restaurants. Spend a day ambling along the front and grab some lunch halfway through.
Apartments are the most common properties for sale in Puerto del Carmen, most in complexes. Many come with a pool, although most of these are communal rather than private.
Above the town though, are many larger properties – villas with plenty of bedrooms, outside space, private pools and usually with great sea views.
Also – between Puerto del Carmen’s Old Town and Puerto Calero are some truly special detached properties. If your budget is a particularly healthy one, speak to agents to see if any are currently avalable. They go fast though!
Apartments start just shy of €90,000 and villas can go for as high as €3,000,000.

In Praise Of
“Puerto del Carmen is situated towards the centre of Lanzarote, so nowhere on the island is more than 40 minutes away. As Lanzarote’s largest resort, it has a good number of restaurants and bars for the more discerning resident and tourist, such as La Ola and Vino Mas as well as being home to the island’s second largest shopping centre (CC Biosfera).” – Adam Simmons.
