March Book review: “Sandwiches in The Sun” – Chris Herman
Regular visitors to this blog will know that we lived in Lanzarote for a few years before moving to Almeria. So when Chris Herman told us about his book, Sandwiches in The Sun, I was keen to read it!
Chris Herman and his wife Sue, moved to Lanzarote in 2006… the same year that we did. This book tells their story, complete with the highs and lows that accompany any move of this type.
Chris and Sue are very active Christians, and this is a constant theme throughout the book. Although I do not follow religion myself, I still enjoyed the stories of how they settled into a new congregation, and in particular some of the characters along the way. Their faith carried them through some tough times. I recognised a large number of the people that they speak about in the book (even if there were one or two name changes ha ha).
Chris does not paint a rosy picture throughout… and is very honest about some of the low periods they experienced – something that authors of this type of book could learn from. I have been speaking with Sue for some years now, but now I know Chris a little better too.
Chris speaks about events and areas that I know very well… but his descriptions would paint a good picture for any reader.
Downside? Well, if I had to pick one – it would be that I now despise Chris for being able to pick up so many languages so easily – smart Alec!
This was a very entertaining read, and I would recommend it particularly for people moving to Lanzarote, but it is also a great read for people moving anywhere abroad.
