La Marina Hackers – Jan 18 match report
On Wednesday January 3 2016, 16 members and two guests travelled the short distance to La Marina Hackers “home course” of El Plantio for the first game of 2018. We were supposed to have 20 players but we had a couple of late cancellations for medical reasons from Lee (groin strain – stop playing with yourself Lee) and Wim (unspecified illness but rumoured to be either ebola or bubonic plague). We wish them both a speedy recovery!

In spite of the relatively early start (09:52), the day was lovely, sunny and mild as evidenced by several players wearing shorts.
The course was in a very decent condition although the greens were on the slow side and the seasonal discolouration of the fairways (due to the grass going dormant in winter) made them look “burnt”. Another discombobulating factor was the somewhat strange tee placings with some holes playing off what would normally be the red tees and others playing way back at what would normally be the white tees.
We set off slightly before the allocated first tee time of 09:52 with a twosome followed by 4 foursomes. The scoring was not the best with only one player (Wayne H) scoring more than 30 points (33). The Sugs Memorial Cup holder, Ian, had a particularly bad day with an uncharacteristic low score of 13 – probably caused by frostbitten fingers from an unsually cold putter…
Another noticeable low scorer was Captain Colin with a mediocre 16 points, however we suspect this was a result of a cunning plan to get his handicap increased and we will keep our beady eyes on him!
It was great to see the rare return of our members Dave Kitt and Wayne Barton and also good to welcome our newest member, Fredde Moqvist. Thank you to our two guests Steven Marr and Chris who both had decent scores and hopefully enjoyed their day out with the Mad Hackers.
Back at the Woodstock, Corky presented the winners with their prizes in his own inimitable style. The top 3 scorers were Wayne H (33), George (29) and Fredde (27). Best guest was Chris with 27 points and runner up (or worst guest if you prefer) Steven Marr with 25. Nearest to the pin on hole 7 was unclaimed, Kjell won the NTP on hole 9 and Simon hit the longest drive on hole 15. The HILO bonanza was shared by Wayne H and George with 9 points each.
We are a small, but perfectly formed, golf society based on the Costa Blanca, Spain, on the La Marina Urbanisation, San Fulgencio, Alicante. We meet once a month, normally on the first Wednesday of the month. Guest players are always welcome, subject to spaces available.

I spend 4/5 months in Spain and am a member of Jacks golf society. I am looking to play more times whilst I’m here. I am a very average player (22) due to cronic arthritis. I am friends with Alex Green who is a member of your society, and know George Scamell. I would like to join your society, and so can you please advise me if there is a possibility of joining and. If so, how I go about it. I am currently in La Marina.
Best regards
