Juan Manuel Camacho Tudela has won the sixth edition of Huércal-Overa’s “la carrera ciclista del cochinillo” (Pig Race). The fastest lap beat all records and the lower age categories doubled their participation figures.
Huércal-Overa town council and Club Indalbike organised this sixth edition of the race on Sunday January 8 2018. Once again the race proved to be a big success. 120 cyclists participated, coming in from nearby municipalities including Pulpí, Albox, Lorca, Mojácar, Puerto Lumbreras and from further afield as Almería, Murcia, Granada and Alicante.
The cyclists gathered at the start line at 10am in various categories: infant, youth, junior, female and amateur. The amateur category was a new edition this year and proved to be popular. At 11:30am they began, cycling around a four kilometre circuit until 17 laps were completed. A large crowd gathered to spur them on.
It was a close race, and certainly entertained for all those that attended.
It was clear very quickly that several cyclists had the lead. After a test start with the grouped squad, a four-runner flight was formed by Juan Manuel Camacho Tudela, Ginés Navarro Lomas, Juan Jesus Lopez Urquizar and Mario García Quiñonero. Everyone else did their best but couldn’t catch the four at the front. In the end it was the Murcian Camacho Tudela who beat his fellow cyclists, while in second position was Ginés Navarro and in third place was Lopez Urquizar.
Mayor of Huércal-Overa, Domingo Fernández, expressed his pleasure at the day’s event and thanked both the cyclists for their participation and the many fans for their presence. He said, “the test has already become a reference in the cyclist panorama of the province; the response every year is even more positive and the public has enjoyed a great show.”
Thanks must be given for the absence of incidents in the race due to the good organization and hard work of the volunteers and the different bodies of Civil Guard, Local Police and Civil Protection.
