Michaela Talbot
When did you move to Spain, and where from?
I moved to Arboleas Almeria province in September 1996, I actually came on holiday during a divorce and shortly after completing my Diploma in Nursing at Humberside College of Health. At the time I was staying with my older brother in Louth Lincolnshire
Who came with you?
I brought over my cat Dusty, my mum hated cats and thought he was evil … eventually they would sit together on the sofa. We always had dogs in the UK… my parents already lived in Arboleas, they had moved to a ruin from Granada and I believe they were the first English people to live in Arboleas.
Where in Spain do you live now?
Villaricos, a small coastal town with 2 small ports, a castle and a relatively famous Sunday market
What things (apart from loved ones) do you miss from your country of birth?
Nothing! Sorry I can’t really expand on this!
Do you work? As what?
I work as an interpreter! (Fully legal). I translate in any situation, but obviously with my nursing background and having worked in public and private settings, here in Almería and Granada province .
I am fully qualified English nurse registered to work in Spain, registered with the college of nursing in Almería
How are you with speaking Spanish?
No problem whatever, but also I learn a new word every day
If you could change anything about Spain… what would that be? And why?
Not really impressed with the summer heat! Prefer spring or autumn, but would not really want to change it… it’s good to appreciate the best months.
What are the best things about living in Spain?
Obviously the weather compared with the UK. My lifestyle is much healthier, I get to walk my dog Charly enjoying the sea view etc.
My life in general is good, I am self employed and I love the variation and freedom of my chosen work
What are your favourite Spanish dishes?
The Mediterranean diet… Fresh fish, variety of fruit and vegetables…. nothing in particular!
Enjoying the long slow way of eating with good friends and great wine at reasonable price
What is the predominant nationality of your friends in Spain?
Predominantly Spanish, Dutch, Belgian and English in this order
If you won the Euromilliones – would you still live where you currently are? Why / why not?
I would not win because I don’t gamble… If I wanted to live elsewhere… I would move now!
If a movie was made about your life – who would play you? Why?
haha my heroine, Julia Roberts, but I think we are about the same age
If you had to describe yourself as a cocktail… what would you be, and why?
Ufff ….no idea. What’s hard work, hard loving sensitive and independent?
Ed: We would describe Michaela as a Boulevardier: Negroni’s slightly warmer, deeper, more soulful cousin. Still strong and independent, but with a softer, richer side.
