The third edition of Noche de La Luz brought a touch of magic to the bustling Almeriense town. Children and adults alike were wowed by the atmosphere which heralded the advent of Christmas.

Thousands of candles lit up the commercial area and there were lots of activities for all ages. The initiative, organised by the town council was greeted with enthusiasm by visiotors and businesses.

Mayor of Huércal-Overa, Domingo Fernández, together with the Councillor of Commerce, Monica Navarro, followed closely the different activities organised. The events were kicked off by the local schoolchildren with a Christmas carols competition. Fourth year students of CEIP Virgen del Río won first prize – a trip – while a check for school materials was grabbed by second place sixth year students from the same school. Third place was awarded to the kiddies from CPR Las Estancias.

Afterwards, it was time for the parades which saw the town streets filled with fairies, e.ves, jugglers, tightrope walkers and other colourful characters from the hit movie Frozen. Contigo en Navidad (a dance show) was laid on, plus the municipal Hip-Hop school staged a performance in the main square which was followed by the final offering of the night – a tribute act for Hombres G

Fernández told us that the initiative was started “to encourage local trade on this day. We know that the Christmas campaign is of utmost importance to our more than 200 stores and that a large part of its profits depend on it for that reason. We have given support from the Ayuntamiento and designed a vast Christmas program that encourages our residents and visitors to do their shopping here in Huércal-Overa.

Navarro echoed the mayor’s sentiments and added, “Our shopkeepers have been able to increase their business because of the discounts they have offered tonight. We do not have to forget that the objective was to boost buying from our neighbors and visitors. We have achieved this with this huge open air market for Christmas.”

During the next few days the Christmas program will be announced, one of the highlights of which is the reopening of the municipal cinema on December 14th.
