Full steam ahead for Starlite Marbella 2019
If you visit the Costa del Sol often in the summer, then you probably know that the event of the season is always the Starlite Festival.
Taking place over July and August, it marks Marbella as a top level destination for culture vultures and music lovers, as much as for those into toasting on the warm sands of a plethora of beaches. Over the past few years, Starlite has highlighted the very best of Spanish music (think Rosalía, Grammy award winner Alejandro Sanz, or iconic singers like Rafael) but also brought international sensations to Spain’s shores. Last year, for instance, the Pet Shop Boys played to a packed house, and everyone from Jason Derulo right through to Sting, James Blunt, and Jamiroquai have brought a few hours of magic to an outdoor venue that is known for its unique beauty and acoustics.
A Festival in a Quarry
One of the most unique things about Starlite is its venue – in the middle of a stone quarry that makes for truly excellent acoustics. The ride there is interesting too. There is a large free outdoor parking space at the foot of the hill and free buses take ticket holders up to the quarry. Once you arrive, you will be dazzled by the site. Elegance abounds in the sexy outdoor bars, but there are also a bevy of stand-up restaurants selling everything from freshly baked pizza to pasta, sandwiches, and meat dishes. Arrive a couple of hours prior to your concert to enjoy free entertainment. Free shows light up the evening after each concert as all, turning Starlite into a breezy outdoor disco which is ideal in the heat of the summer.
An Ideal Location
If you will be visiting Marbella for the first time just to attend Starlite, make sure to see everything Marbella and the city of Málaga have to offer. The capital city is around 45 minutes’ drive from Marbella but is well worth a visit – as much for its beautiful Old Town and Cathedral as for museums like the Picasso Museum or the Pompidou Art Center. Málaga and Marbella offer a host of fun activities – everything from stand-up paddle to kayaking, simulated skydiving, hiking, and more. If you will be taking part in adventure activities, just make sure you are protected against accidents while visiting. Operating companies are well established and safe, but it always helps to ensure you are covered against health issues you may encounter while travelling.
Who’s Playing at Starlite this Year?
There are so many concerts to choose from, since the event takes place over two entire months. This year, some of the hotly awaited bands and performers include John Legend, Jason Derulo, Kool & The Gang, Luis Fonsi, Eros Ramazzotti, Ben Harper Jessie J, Jamie Cullum, and Nicky Jam. A host of Spanish stars will also be giving it their all on stage – including David Bisbal, Manuel Carrasco, and Melendi. One concert that will will most probably sell out within minutes of tickets going on sale is Maluma, so make sure to book your ticket fast if you love hits like Borro Cassette or Felices los Cuatro.
Starlite is a great excuse to visit Marbella if a beach holiday appeals. Marbella is home to a host of excellent hotels and restaurants – including Dani García’s three- Michelin-starred eponymous restaurant. Just 45 minutes away is Málaga, with its stunning architecture and wide range of cultural offerings ranging from concerts to museums. Further information, www.starlitemarbella.com
