Expat Interview – Joan Fallon

This week, Joan Fallon has filled out our Expat Interview. Joan moved from England to live in Southern Spain and spends her time writing now she is retired. If you would like to be featured, then scroll down and click the interview link. In the meantime, enjoy finding out more about Joan.

When did you move to Spain, and where from?
I moved to Spain in 1998 from England.

Who came with you?
I came with my husband and a four-year old Giant Schnauzer called Katy.

Where in Spain do you live now?
We live in Benajarafe, a few miles east of Malaga.

Do you work? As what?
I am retired but since 2006 I have been working as a writer and novelist.

How are you with speaking Spanish?
When we arrived in Spain the first thing we did was enrol in a language school and for the first two months we went to classes every day.  It was worth it because now my Spanish is more than adequate and I have no problem talking to people or watching Spanish TV.

If you could change one thing about Spain… what would that be?
I don’t think I have ever considered that question. At the moment I’s like to see changes in the economy and the employment law so that more people were in work.  I’d like to see less corruption in the government and civil service but then I don’t think that is unique to Spain.  The only thing that really bothers me about Spain is the attitude to bullfighting.

What is the best thing about living in Spain?
We have a wonderful climate in Malaga.  The people are more relaxed and there is a better balance between work and leisure.  The Spanish really know how to enjoy life.

What is your favourite Spanish dish?
I love all the seafood, tortilla de patata and paella.

What is the predominant nationality of your friends in Spain?
Our friends are mostly Spanish and English – about half and half.

If you won the Euromilliones – would you still live where you currently are?
Yes I would continue to live in this area.  I would keep my current house and buy a fabulous flat in Malaga, overlooking the port.  All our friends live in the area and also family – my daughter and grandson.

If a movie was made about your life – who would play you?
What a hard question – probably someone like Vanessa Redgrave or Maggie Smith.

If you had to describe yourself as a sandwich filling… what would you be?
Well they say you are what you eat so I had better be careful – maybe roast beef with plenty of English mustard.
