It covers the official Tabac shops and cigarette machines in Spain that are government controlled,. Please note that not all brands are sold in all shops.
These figures cover mainland Spain (mainland) and the Balearics. At this time we don’t have the figures for the Canary Islands. They are not easy to find and so you are better off visiting a local forum or Facebook Group for current information. It’s a question often asked, so you should be able to find some up to date information anyway. If not – you can always ask the question yourself!

How do cigarette prices in Spain work?
In Spain, cigarette prices are not a free for all. They are set nationally and published in the official state bulletin. In practical terms, that means a pack of Marlboro costs the same whether you are in Madrid, Málaga or a small village in Almería. No haggling, no “tourist price”, no surprises.
You will usually buy tobacco from a licensed shop called an Estanco. These are state regulated and are the only places, along with authorised vending machines, allowed to sell tobacco.
The one notable exception is the Canary Islands. They operate under a different tax regime, so prices there are typically lower. If you are heading that way, your wallet will notice.

How old do I have to be to buy tobacco in Spain?
You must be 18 or over. That is the law, and it is enforced.
If you look remotely youthful or simply unlucky, you may be asked for photo ID. This is entirely normal and not a personal attack on your skincare routine.
There are occasional reports of people being asked for additional details when buying unusually large quantities. This tends to be anecdotal and likely linked to efforts to prevent resale or export beyond legal limits. Most regular customers who build a rapport with their local Estanco will never encounter this.

How many cigarettes can I take to the UK from Spain?
Since Brexit, the rules are no longer quite so generous.
Per adult, you can bring one of the following into the UK without paying duty:
- 200 cigarettes
- 100 cigarillos
- 50 cigars
- 250g tobacco
- 200 sticks for heated tobacco devices
You can split this allowance if you wish. For example, 100 cigarettes and 125g of rolling tobacco is perfectly acceptable.
If you exceed your allowance, you must declare it. And here is the important bit. You will pay tax on the entire amount, not just the excess. At that point, your bargain Spanish cigarettes may suddenly feel like a poor financial decision.

Cigarette prices in Spain
Prices do change periodically as taxes are adjusted, but Spain remains cheaper than the UK.
As a rough guide in 2026:
A standard pack of cigarettes is typically around €5 to €6.50
Premium brands sit towards the top of that range
Still noticeably less painful than UK prices, but no longer the astonishing bargain they once were.

Smoking in Spain
Smoking bans
Spain has fairly strict anti smoking laws. You cannot smoke in enclosed public spaces, workplaces or on public transport. Outdoor terraces are generally allowed unless specifically restricted.
There have been ongoing discussions and local rules in some regions about extending bans to certain outdoor areas such as beaches or hospital grounds, so it is always worth checking signage rather than assuming.

Recent figures suggest that roughly 20 to 22 percent of adults in Spain smoke. The rate has been gradually declining over time, although it remains higher than in some other Western European countries.

Spain follows EU regulations, meaning cigarette packs feature large graphic health warnings covering around 65 percent of the packaging. They are not subtle, and they are not designed to be.

Spain’s public healthcare system can also provide assistance through GPs and local health centres.
Final puff
If you smoke, Spain is still a cheaper place to maintain the habit than the UK, though the gap is narrowing. If you are planning to take cigarettes back with you, stick to the rules unless you enjoy donating money to HMRC.
And if you are considering quitting, Spain has plenty of support available. Your lungs will thank you, even if your Estanco owner quietly mourns the loss of business.
