Initial details of Christmas in Huércal-Overa 2016 have been released by the Ayuntamiento after a meeting held between business owners and Monica Navarro, the councillor of Commerce.
Monica Navarro met yesterday (November 10) with various business owners of Huércal-Overa to discuss the council’s porposals and to hear suggestions from the business owners.
Among the activities planned for the Christmas period is the celebration of Navidad Dulce, an initiative that will be held from December 16 to January 6. Different bakeries and cake shops of the town will offer traditional Huercalense sweet treats with a hot drink for a small price of €1.50. Navarro explained, “This is to share the knowledge of our traditional cakes to our residents and visitors and to continue them through the generations.”
Navarro went on to explain that more details will be released soon, but that Navidad Dulce would be run in a similar fashion to Ruta de la Tapa with various prizes and a “sweet passport.”
December 17 2016 will be Día de la Empanada – a repeat of an previously popular event. It will be held in the Plaza de Abastos. The Huércalense empanada is flavoured with almonds and visitors will be able to purchase and enjoy! The proceeds will be donated to a charity within the town.
Navarro added that in addition to the empanadas available for purchase, there will be more local crafts. “We will have stalls with demonstrations and sales of esparto, pottery and lace in the same location of Plaza de Abastos so that anyone who fancies a sweet empanada can also find out more about our local customs. They can perhaps buy some items to give as presents.”
An empanada workshop will be held on November 26 in the same plaza – where local bakers will teach anyone who wishes to learn, how to make empanadas. Again, more details will be released by Monica Navarro soon.
As every year, Huércal-Overa will be adorned with seasonal lighting in commercial areas. The musical events begin on December 9.
