Cava & Hotel Mastinell
We receive a large amount of publicity articles here at Spain Buddy, but every now and again… one stands head and shoulders above the rest. Cava & Hotel Mastinell is one such establishment. A 2014 winner of the “Best tourist establishment award in Spain”, as awarded by the Spanish Association of Wine Cities (ACEVIN) and Turespaña, Mastinell offers something more than most of its peers.
We are very proud to have been chosen by Turespaña and ACEVIN as best tourist establishment with wine tourism services in Spain. For us, the excellence of our hotel as well as our wine and cava is vital; therefore we personally manage all processes in order to ensure the highest quality in both our products and services.
– Manuel Valderrama, president of Cava & Hotel Mastinell.
It is no secret that Spain Buddys enjoys a drop or two of Cava, and has happily sampled a number of varieties – all in the name of research you understand. That is just one reason that a visit to Mastinell is such a treat. Mastinell offers a chance to be a winemaker for a few days within its facilities, but also to stay in one of its 12 exclusive rooms.
While staying at Mastinell, you can get truly hands on and learn about the grape growing process, as well as enjoying tastings and experience gourmet wine pairings.
Location
Cava & Hotel Mastinell is situated in the centre of the Penedès region (Barcelona – Catalonia), and is just 35 minutes drive from Barcelone-Prat airport, and only 45 minutes from Barcelona itself.
Award Winning
In addition to winning the “best tourist establishment” award, Mastinell was also awarded the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Interior Design in Shanghai 2011. The modernist spirit so well respected in its build is stunning… with latticework on the windows to resemble cava bottles sitting in a rack… and the ceramic tiles synonymous with Antoni Gaudí’s style – so prevalent in the region.
A five-star hotel with curved design architecture reminiscent of large bottles of cava while nestling in a vineyard that invites visitors to enter and enjoy the whole Mastinell Experience.
Managing the vineyard plays the major role in our Cava & Hotel Mastinell. Our wine and cava are created using a careful process of harvesting the best grapes at optimum ripeness. Since Phoenician times, the land of Vilafranca del Penedes had a strong tradition of wine production and we wish to make it available to all travellers who want to experience it
– Olivia Valderrama, managing director of Cava & Hotel Mastinell.
With a limited production of 220,000 Mastinell bottles of cava and 80,000 Mastinell bottles of wine, both cava and wine have the highest quality recognised by national and international awards, including Gold Medals at the World Wine Competition in Brussels (Belgium), Silver Medals at the Decanter (United Kingdom) and the Mondiale du Rosé (France) along with Bronze Medals at the Wine & Spirit Competition (United Kingdom) and at the Challenge International (Hong Kong).
Thanks to a typically Mediterranean climate, summers are long -moderately hot and dry- and winters are mild; which provides a perfect environment for vine cultivation and of course this also makes it ideal for visitors at any time of year.
The Restaurant
The Hotel’s En Rima Restaurant showcases the best of the region, with absolute respect shown to Catalan and Mediterranean cuisine, both from sea and from the land. They focus on the freshest of produce, in a beautifully decorated and cosy area. Simple… healthy… and of course will match perfectly with any of the vineyard’s produce.
Enjoy the views to the open kitchen, as your food is lovingly prepared by chef Jaume

The Valderrana Family
The Valderrama family personally manages the grape growing along with wine and cava varieties such as macabeo, xarel·lo, chardonnay and parellada. The family also handles the whole process of its wine production and gourmet cava until those reach the point of sale.
Valderrama family is also responsible for managing both excellence and attention to detail in regards its Cava & Hotel Mastinell (35 minutes away from Barcelona Airport), a five-star hotel which includes 12 totally exclusive and absolutely customised rooms, overlooking the vineyard and winery.
Environment and Sustainability
The Cava & Hotel Mastinell exhibits a major amount of respect for the environment. This commitment to sustainable development mainly shows through rainwater collection systems, cross ventilation and solar filtration due to the stained glass windows design. In addition, Mastinell operates a biomass boiler – non-polluting ecological fuel-, LED lighting, furniture and decorative items from natural raw materials which are certified for their low environmental impact.
Apart from Spanish visitors, the main origins of Cava & Hotel Mastinell visitors currently come from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, and other countries where its wine and cava have been recognised with the highest awards.
