Casa Zibu Peñiscola: Review
Casa Zibu Peñiscola, was our “home” for a couple of days in June 2023 – part of Alan’s surprise birthday road trip. Scroll down for the information and photos.
I must have spent hours and hours on various booking websites, looking for somewhere cute for our stay in Peñiscola on the Costa del Azahar recently. Neither of us had been there before so we were unsure what to expect from the area. A dear friend (Judith) told me that she had been and loved it… and her description was enough for me to seriously consider it as an area to visit.
One AirBnb listing kept me coming back again and again to drool over the photos… and so I booked it. How glad I was that I did!
Before our trip to Casa Zibu Peñiscola
Right from the moment I booked, Elena (our host) was attentive and friendly! She didn’t complain once when I was sending her a billion WhatsApps on the day… and she offered help with recommendations and ideas for things to do. She gave us the privacy we crave on holiday, yet was always available when we had questions. To be fair, we didn’t have many questions once we arrived because the home had everything we needed. She even messaged me when we were at the next step of our trip to check that we had arrived safely and were having a lovely time. We will be keeping in touch for sure. As I type this, I’ve just had another message from her – she’s super!
Casa Zibu from the outside
The building is a very VERY cute whitewashed house with blue accents, on a narrow cobbled street in the Bufador area of Peñiscola. The property itself is located on the bottom two floors of the building. and is just a short walk from the castle’s outer walls with easy access to the many bars, restaurants and shops that line the pretty streets.
There is a tobacco shop and a cashpoint just seconds away, as well as a little shop that sells sweets and crisps. Just a few more steps and down a slope you have two more bars. We spent some very entertaining hours in El Salabre. Highly recommended for a chill vibe with amazing staff! We were extremely well looked after there.
Ground floor
The ground floor of Casa Zibu has a kitchenette, dining table and chairs plus some comfortable seating too. It has been decorated beautifully, with exposed rock walls, plants and little decorative touches that are a testament to Elena’s great taste.
The kitchen was well equipped with pots, pans, utensils and obviously plates and cutlery. There is also a coffee machine. There’s a two ring ceramic hob and a sink. It’s small but very useable. Underneath was a large washing machine and various cleaning products.
Tucked just around the corner was a decent-sized fridge-freezer and clothes rack.
Elena also left a beautiful welcome pack plus a little extra gift to help celebrate Alan’s birthday in style! It was a lovely surprise.
Upstairs
Up just a few stairs is the bedroom and bathroom plus access to a balcony overlooking the pretty street.
This room is spectacular! The large bed is the main attraction and was extremely cuddle – much like snuggling into a loved one’s arms. Behind it to one side was a toilet and sink, while on the other side was a lovely shower!
The room is decorated beautifully and was a real haven of calm. It was lovely and cool inside and we hardly used the aircon despite the heatwave… but I’ll bet that’s a Godsend in the height of summer!
There was also an iron and mini ironing board up there.
Oh and for those of you that (like me) normally have to pack a hairdryer on holidays because others are usually terrible – don’t! The hairdryer in the bathroom was very powerful. You can safely leave yours at home which gives you more of that valuable suitcase room!
Twinkly lights, windows, a television and various other pretty decorative touches made it just perfect!
Overall
This really is a very VERY pretty place to stay and at a great price. The location was great, the property itself was gorgeous and we would wholeheartedly recommend it to any couples looking for something as beautiful as the area it is located in.
Access to Casa Zibu Peñiscola
Our host, Elena, gave us detailed instructions on how to get to her place. Basically, we were permitted with a few minutes access to load and unload before heading back out to park.
Streets are naturally narrow within the castle walls, so be careful if your car is on the larger side. Vans seemed to manage okay though, so with a little care and attention you’ll be fine!
It must be noted that the area up on the hill is closed to cars for most of the day… so you have a couple of choices.
- Park just outside the city walls (free and paid options available). Be sure to top up the parking meter… the ticket checkers are out in force as they should be!
- Park slightly further away via a friend of Elena’s (we chose this option and were very happy with the underground, secure parking we received for a very low cost). Just ask Elena and she can help.

We received no financial reward for writing this review of Casa Zibu Peñiscola. I wrote it simply because it was such a gorgeous place… and we wanted our readers to add it to their future choices too! Book it and enjoy!
