Huércal Overa in Almería has announced their Carrera Cochinillo winner as José Manuel Cayuela. This was the fourth edition of the race and was attended by 150 cyclists of mixed abilities, ages and nationalities.
The cycling event, organised by the Department of Sports at Huércal Overa council has been deemed a success by the town hall in terms of organisation, publicity and participation.
Participants came, not only from Huércal Overa, but also from mearby towns as Albox, Lorca, Mojacar, Puerto Lumbreras and Pulpí as well as a little further including Almería city and Granada.
The cyclists set off at 10.30am yesterday (Sunday January 10), with the youngsters and an hour later the general category followed. Included among the cyclists was sportsman Juan Antonio Sánchez Navarro from Mazarron. Juan Antonio has been successful at local and regional levels and recently achieved national awards. Former professional cyclist Manuel Martinez Costa who won Spain’s BTT Championship was also in attendance. Maunel was last year’s Carrera Cochinillo winner.
The 58 kilometre route took the cyclists around a four kilometre route through and around the town. The race was tightly run and gave attendees a great opportunity to see the cyclists battling for first place.
Finally José Manuel Cayuela was announced as the first to pass the finish line, closely followed by Manuel Martinez Costa in second place and Juan Jose Martinez in third.
At the awards ceremony Huércal Overa’s mayor, Domingo Fernández, expressed his pleasure at the day and its events. He described the event as a “must” in the town’s calendar of sporting activities and spoke of the yearly increase in attendees and participants. The mayor was accompanied by the Councillor for Sports, Blas Sanchez, and Councillor for Agriculture, Emilio Perez.
Of special note was the abense of any injuries. Thanks go to the organisers and volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure everyone was safe and enjoyed themselves. Club Indalbike were proud sponsors of the event.
