Barbershop Choir in Lanzarote
Today we were chatting about the Barbershop Choir in Lanzarote with Angela Webster, a long time resident on the Island. It soon became clear that this would be great information to share here on Spain Buddy.
Angela tells us that the Ladies Barbershop Chorus LAS ENCANTADAS have been going for three years. They are of many nationalities – Spanish, Canarian, American, English, Peruvian, Swedish, German and even a singer from Hong Kong at the moment, and they have also had French and Italian members. Usually there are 12 of them, though people of course come and go. They also have a new Quartet “Lava”, who will be competing in the National Championships next April in Calpe.Las Encantadas meet every Monday in Angela’s house in San Bartolome, Lanzarote, where they learn traditional Barbershop songs, as well as some non-traditional four part A Capella numbers, and are always ready to sing out at charity events on the island. The quartet meet every Friday night for an intense rehearsal, followed by wine and pizza.
Angela goes on the explain that she is a life-time singer, though when she was asked to lead Las Encantadas, she felt it was a big challenge. She had sung some Barbershop in the past, but had never lead a chorus before, so off she went to Barbershop conventions and music schools to polish up her act.
Every week the girls comment on how great they feel after a good ‘sing’ – Angela says it seems to do the same things for you as sport does, but without the pain!
Angela adds, “Personally it has been an eye opener for me, and has lead to me becoming Treasurer of the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (based on the mainland) and helping to run the National Convention each year, as well as educational events for other Barbershop singers”.
They welcome anyone who wants to sing. Angela says, “I am very happy to say that some of our members initially came along saying they didn’t think they could – but are now fully fledged Barbershoppers!”

Elle, along with Alan, is the owner of Spain Buddy and the busy web design business – Spain Web Design by Gandy-Draper.
Born a “Norverner”, she then spent most of her life “Dann Saff” before moving to Spain in 2006. Elle’s loves are Alan, the internet, dogs, good food, and dry white wine – although not necessarily in that order.

Hi Angela and the Las Encantadas,
I and my wife are barbershoppers in Helsinki Finland, members of Finnish Association of Barbershop Singers http://www.fabs.fi and came from this Santa Claus’s homeland to warm up our throats to Los Cristianos Tenerife for a week.
It was nice to see that there is BS activity even in these Canary islands. Unfortunately we are too far away from Lanzarote to visit your rehearsals tomorrow, but on our next visit to Canary we shall plan to include BS as well.
