Did you get caught out by our April Fools post this morning? Some did – although most spotted the obvious clue, “Avril Fuller,” and realised it was a spoof. Here is the link if you missed it:
An April Fool should be believable. It’s the whole point of it. We always try to match ours to current affairs at the time to achieve that. This was not the first and won’t be the last.
Not so far from the truth?
We set out with the aim of making people think. We wanted to cause alarm for the few who couldn’t see the obvious. We wanted a bit of panic. Why? Because what is scary is that this financial situation could occur if Brexit happens. It probably won’t but it could. Anything could. Putting aside all the speculation – nobody knows what will happen. Not even the governments know yet. People who have studied economics and politics for years don’t know. So what hope of working it all out Mr Expat – while sat at the bar on the Costa has… well, not a lot really (although judging by what we see online – everyone has a damn good go).
- Is your mortgage safe? I don’t know and you don’t know.
- Is your pension likely to be affected? I don’t know and you don’t know.
- Will you have freedom of movement? I don’t know and you don’t know.
- Will you be financially affected? I don’t know and you don’t know.
To be fair, we think it’s very unlikely that the Brits will get kicked out of other countries – most of these countries see a lot of financial benefit from having us here. We don’t buy into the scaremongering that is flying about that says we’ll all be back in Blighty before we know it – we think that’s tosh… but we do feel that it is right to be concerned about Brexit. Concerned enough to vote.
Do your research… and if you are in any doubt about what may or may not happen – then make your vote count. What could Brexit mean for you? For your family? For your loved ones? Whichever way you wish to vote – you should vote.
If you left the UK less than 15 years ago, you can still have your say. You can vote by post or by proxy.
In other news…
Here are our April Fool articles from previous years too.
- 2015: New Drivers License rules for summer 2015
- 2014: New pool tax in Spain targets struggling expats
- 2013: Spanish tests for extranjeros
The news in Spain is frequently like reading an April Fool joke. The same goes for the UK and the USA… and probably most places around the world. With so much horror and sadness constantly thrust upon us from day to day… we should remember our sense of humour to get through it all.
For those of you that fell for this? Remember the date next time… and look for clues in the articles. Avril Fuller was a real giveaway. We’ll always include them.
