This week’s Expat Interview features Clare Shirley. Clare is one of the friendliest people you are likely to meet and was extremely helpful when we moved from Lanzarote to Almeria… and continues to be so. Enjoy! If you would like to be interviewed, the link is at the bottom of this page.

Clare ShirleyWhen did you move to Spain, and where from?
I moved to Torrevieja in 1988 and then to Almeria in 2002 after a brief spell in Southampton

Who came with you?
My Husband and our cat Gizmo

Where in Spain do you live now?
In Albox in Almeria

Do you work? As what?
I work as an Opticians auxillary and as a Spanish teacher

How are you with speaking Spanish?
I am bilingual and extremely fluid in Andaluz much to the disgust of my Torreviejense friends

If you could change one thing about Spain… what would that be?
illegal homes and bureaucracy they are ruining peoples lives and the economy

What is the best thing about living in Spain?
Everything!!!! I love the fact that I am bringing up my girls here and they are bilingual and can be children here for much longer than in the UK. I love the Spanish culture and food and the way we have integrated into the community. Everywhere we go we get smiles and hellos

What is your favourite Spanish dish?
Patatas a lo pobre. Sliced potatoes with red and green peppers slowly cooked in olive oil.
My hubby and I fight over who gets the most when we go tapeando!!

What is the predominant nationality of your friends in Spain?

If you won the Euromilliones – would you still live where you currently are?
Yes but I would move to a house with a pool

If a movie was made about your life – who would play you?
Hmmm I don’t know, someone dizzy like me. Renee Zellweger in her “Bridget Jones” moment

If you had to describe yourself as a sandwich filling… what would you be?
Hmm cheese and tomato, nice and easy
