Expat Interview Aug No 3. Lesley Miller

Decrease Font Size Increase Font Size Text Size Print This Page

One of the people that really helped us with advice, as we moved from the Canary Islands to Almeria, was Lesley Miller. She has lived in the area for quite some time and was able to answer many of my “silly” questions – always politely and with lots of extra info too. It took almost a year to finally get together with Lesley socially… but hopefully there will be a lot more of that to come. Fancy a glass of vino in town in the next week or two, Lesley?

Lesley Miller

When did you move to Spain, and where from?
We moved here in 2007 from the northern Lake District in the UK – a small town called Wigton, about 10 miles west of Carlisle.

Who came with you?
My partner Pete.

Where in Spain do you live now?
A small barriada of Arboleas in Almeria Province, called Los Higuerales

Do you work? As what?
I own a small lingerie business, importing from the UK and selling to ex-pats and Spanish customers.

How are you with speaking Spanish?
I’m OK – I studied to A level, (many years ago!), and didn’t speak another word in Spanish until 2006 when we bought our land in Spain.  Now with having a business here and having to communicate with my accountant and solicitor, both of whom speak very little English, my Spanish has improved a lot, although I do speak with a slight Andaluz accent apparently!

If you could change one thing about Spain… what would that be?
Whinging Brits, who constantly compare Spain unfavourably with the UK.

What is the best thing about living in Spain?
The friendliness of most of the Spanish – we have been ‘adopted’ by one Spanish family and we are also part of quite a few others too.

Lesley & ManoloWhat is your favourite Spanish dish?
Paella mixta………   or Migas……….  of Gambas piri piri……  or huevos revueltos con champinones…..  no wait – fresh bread and home made alioli !!! – I’m afraid I love my food.

What is the predominant nationality of your friends in Spain?
About 40% Spanish and the remaining 60% British, Dutch, Belgian, Swedish etc etc.

If you won the Euromilliones – would you still live where you currently are?
Yes, although I may consider purchasing a traditional finca out in the wilds and a town house so that I could live between them.

If a movie was made about your life – who would play you?
I would like it to be Cher – not because we look similar, but because I would love to age as well as she has.

If you had to describe yourself as a sandwich filling… what would you be?
Tuna mayo with lettuce and cucumber, topped with sweet chilli sauce……  looking like a regular sandwich, but with one hell of a kick!

Right – now is the chance to tell us all about your business/website/blog if you have one (or more of course). Go for your life!
We maintain a broad stock of ladies underwear in a variety of styles and sizes.  The majority is imported from the UK.  We sell through a variety of outlets, including Los Llanos market, (between Arboleas and Albox), and friends’ shops in local towns and villages, plus house parties and charity events.  We also have a ‘sourcing service’ for specific items requested by our customers and offer a mail order option for customers who do not live in the immediate area, with payment via Paypal or bank transfer.  We can be contacted by e-mail on frillies@live.com or on our Facebook page – search for ‘Frillies UK Lingerie’
