Carnival in Valverde in El Hierro
The ayuntamiento has unveiled the poster for the carnival in Valverde in El Hierro, Canary Islands. The theme for 2017 is “Grandes Musicales” (great musicals).
The poster, designed by Jerry Walter Lima Hamilton was selected as the winner from five finalists. You can view Jerry’s poster, and those of the other four, whilst they are on display at the consistory until March 2 2017.
The poster is titled Cantado Bajo de Lluvia (Singing in the Rain” and pays homage to the great musicals of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The selection jury was comprised of Valverde’s mayor (Daniel Morales), the Councillor for Fiestas (Aránzazu Gutiérrez), the Councillor for Youth and Sports (David Pérez), a Journalist (Sergio Gutiérrez) and Graduate of Fine Arts (Rubén Armichle).
Mayor Daniel Morales explained that, “the poster perfectly represents the allegory of this year’s carinval edition,” and he went on to stress that “the artist has chosen one of the icons of our island – the giant lizard – to recreate the famous scene of the musical Singing in The Rain in which the actor Gene Kelly dances in the rain holding onto a lamppost, as well as including the Plaza Virrey de Manila, an excellent place included in many carnival acts.”
The Councillor for Fiestas, Aránzazu Guitiérrez, pointed out the colour and originality of the poster which “reflects the joy of all participants in our carnival, as well as the most important features of our municipality and its carnival.”
The carinval in Valverde will be held from March 3 to 5 2017 and the ayuntamiento is expected to annoouce the programme of events in the coming days.
La Frontera’s carnival has already started, running from February 25 to March 1 2017. The theme for La Frontera’s carnival this year is “El Futuro” (The Future).
